Connect to...An Engaging Chanukah

“Chankuah, oh Chanukah come light the menorah...” is exactly what a group from our Engage Leadership Council from Brooklyn and Manhattan did in December, at the home of Elaine Gould in Brooklyn.

What a beautiful and fun evening. Sandy Abramson, Elaine Gould, Susie Hirsch, Doris Klueger, Howard Simka, Linda Simka, Susan Sysler, Margie Stern, Lola Greene, Engage Community Organizer Susan Kranberg, and Engage Director Rabbi Brian Fink congregated around the foyer table to light our own chanukiot, shared stories, and sang songs with much gusto!

Earlier, we gathered in the kitchen to prepare latkes. Thanks to Sandy, Susie, Susan, Doris, Elaine, and Linda, we enjoyed both traditional potato and sweet potato latkes. Together, we all brought a variety of food, including the toppings for the latkeshomemade applesauce from Susie and sour cream and crème fraiche from Sandy. Doris provided a homemade cake, and we enjoyed sufganiot with jelly, caramel, and custard filling from Isaac's Bakery on Avenue J. Oh yum!

What a delightful way to spend the holiday; sharing homemade food, laughter, and smiles, while learning more about fellow volunteers whom we don’t often get to see. A big thank you to Elaine for opening her home and letting us invade her kitchen!

As Engage volunteers we do so much for so many. We look forward to building on what we have achieved in both Brooklyn and Manhattan with many more joint opportunities this year.
