I can’t believe that it’s holiday time already—Thanksgiving and Chanukah are just around the corner! Although I think about what I am thankful for throughout the year, this is the season when gratitude becomes even more top-of-mind. Let me reflect on a couple of reasons why this year is so special to me:
- Over the past year, I've had three friends who faced very difficult and life-changing events. I am so grateful that they have all persevered and are now thriving.
- I also joined Engage this year, and I’m especially thankful not only to have had the chance to participate in meaningful programs to help others, but to have forged new friendships as well.
In fact, the highlight of my year was participating in the JCC's Coffee House event for Holocaust survivors on November 5, in partnership with Selfhelp Community Services, which was attended by about 40 survivors. About 15 Engage volunteers were also on hand to serve coffee and cake, as well as chat with each guest. Live music was provided by a traditional band that entertained us with classic songs in Polish, Russian, and Yiddish, encouraging everyone to sing and dance.
Two survivors who stood out to me were Miriam, who got everyone up on the dance floor and even tired me out, and Lily, who is celebrating her 90th birthday this week, and has the energy, enthusiasm, and wit to keep one engaged for hours. Our guests were very thankful for this wonderful afternoon, and are looking forward to future events with Engage as much as I am.
Being thankful to have met this group is an understatement, and I look forward to participating in many more Engage opportunities and encourage you all to do the same. What are you thankful for this year? Please let us know by commenting below.
